“Committed to encouraging athletics in North Canterbury ”

Membership

The North Canterbury Athletic Club caters for athletes of all abilities and ages. Members range in age from 7 to 67 years, while the ability of members ranges from star performers to social joggers. New members are always welcome, you may find someone who shares similar interests with you or who just wants to enjoy chatting while out for a leisurely run. Our club is friendly and accommodating to all members. Our membership base while predominantly from the Rangiora and Kaiapoi areas has members from as far afield as Hawarden, Oxford and different parts of Christchurch.

Club History

The club was founded in 1978, initially for social runners, cross country and road running then later also moving into track & field. The club currently has a membership of around 90 throughout the winter months with an increase in numbers as the children's summer athletics season starts. There have been many notable performers over the years; from the early days with Joanne Best (NZ Heptathlon and 400m Hurdle champion), Brent Pulley (NZ Cross-country team) and Dave Rowell the winner of many NZ Veteran track titles and World Championship placings, to the more recent times with representation at major international competitions by Julia Brown (Pole Vault), Angela Smit (800m), Lucy Oliver (Cross-country), Ruth Croft (Cross-country, steeplechase & Mt Running), Nicole Rogal (Mt Running) and Rebecca Moore (Marathon) The national and provincial titles won over the last ten years number in the hundreds.

Activities

The club is most active during the winter season when a structured program of events is provided. From the beginning of April through until mid October events are offered most Saturdays and some other days as well. Events range from interclub races to club races (fun events and championships, all for trophies) and club runs. Club events are held on weekends that no interclub races are being held. Club runs are held from varying places and sometimes we either host another club or they host us for combined runs. Club runs are split into packs of runners of similar ability, this enables all members to run and socialise at the same time and not have to worry about running with people who are considerably faster and fitter than themselves. There is a standing club run from The Plough Hotel, Rangiora, every Thursday night commencing at 6.00pm. Club races range from handicap events to mixed relay teams, where each team is of equivalent ability. Interclub races are spaced roughly a fortnight apart. These races are over varying distances, terrain and age grades. There are scratch races, handicaps and relays, both over cross country and on road. The major events locally each season are, Canterbury Cross-country and Road championships plus the Takahe to Akaroa Relay which is the unofficial team championship event. There are also national championship events for cross country, road and relays.

Gradings

Until the age of 20 years there are grades changes every two or three years, commencing at Under 10 years, then over 20 years are the senior grades and later on masters. Masters begin at 35 for women and men and then 5 year grades there after.
