 The North Canterbury Junior Basketball Association was formed in 1981 to promote basketball in North Canterbury.
The Association runs a Friday night Primary School basketball competition which has grown to 80 teams involving over 750 children playing in Terms 1 & 4 of the school year, on 7 different courts at the McAlpines Mitre 10 Mega Sports Centre; Southbrook, Rangiora High, Woodend, Kaiapoi High, and Oxford.
In 1982, the NCJBA initiated a Tri tournament, which has now extended to a Quad tournament involving Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Canterbury for players Under 12, Under 14, and Under 16.
The NCJBA also started the first Primary School age tournament in New Zealand in 1990, (known as the NCJBA South Island Primary Tournament.) This annual tournament is held over the middle weekend of the first school holidays with teams from across the South Island entering. A development grade has been added to increase the opportunity for up and coming players.
North Canterbury Representative teams compete in the Regional, South Island, and National tournaments at Primary level through to Opens. The club also enter teams in the Canterbury Basketball Winter competition in Premier Women's and Men's grades.
The NCJBA has a comprehensive referee development programme in place with young local referees controlling all Primary competition games under the guidance of Basketball NZ qualified referees. These referees are encouraged to gain BBNZ qualifications and officiate at age group tournaments at South Island and National levels.
The North Canterbury Junior Basketball Association is part of an administrative hub provided by the North Canterbury Sport & Recreation Trust at the McAlpines Mitre 10 Mega Sports Centre.
